Engineering Automation: Mass Customization
EDA can develop and implement an automated sales-engineering-manufacturing
system that can make it possible to customize every order to meet a customer's
needs and requirements. This process of mass customization allows
customer-specified products to finally be produced at a cost close to that of
mass-produced items. For example, some bicycle manufacturers are starting
to produce high-end bicycles completely customized to their customers'
preferences and body measurements. While customized products can command
a much higher price than off-the-shelf models with roughly the same parts and
assembly, an automated system can bring down the cost of production and raise
the profit margin.
An automated sales-engineering-manufacturing system integrates a variety of
technologies to streamline processes from sales order entry to
manufacturing. An example of such an integrated system might include:
-
Web-based product configurator
-
Rule-based design systems
-
Automated engineering calculation systems
-
Bill of Material generating systems
-
Automated manufacturing systems
-
eCommerce systems
